Always in Training

I feel that if a person isn't learning then they are dying. For myself the area of greatest learning and passion is education. As an educator for nearly 20 years, I have seen my own personal development grow and change. I currently work in a small progressive charter high school in the northwestern suburbs of Minneapolis - Northwest Passage High School. Our school is project based with an extensive experiential focus that includes conducting over forty expeditions each year. We use an advisory system with one advisor for every 15 advisees. My advisory was named by students the Jedi Academy, both for my own geeky passion for Star Wars, but also for the underlying concept that all Jedi have at least one mentor who guides the learner until they are ready to become a Jedi themselves. As an advisor I am constantly asking students to try new things, experiment with new technologies and reflect upon their learning. Now I am challenging myself to do the same with this blog.

This blog will be a way for me to reflect upon my own practice of teaching, a tool for sharing resources and information with other educators, and hopefully an ongoing dialog on the topic of progressive education.
